From
the Southwest Corner Office
This past “off-season” has been
unlike any other for us here at Frattalone.
What usually is a relaxing period to reflect, analyze and plan
for the upcoming season has been nothing of the sort.
In addition to the above mentioned procedures, we have also
been extremely busy working on our new facility, as well as changing
our company’s name and logo. As mentioned in the last edition of the
Frattalone Scoop, we were to soon share the new company
information and I am proud to announce our new name:
Frattalone
Companies, Inc.
and our new logo:

The official name and logo change will
be effective with the start of our new fiscal year, April 1st,
2004. Just as most of you
have spent ample amount of time and consideration choosing a name for
a child, this too was not a simple task.
We feel that “Frattalone Companies” best illustrates that
we offer a wide variety of construction services.
The new logo was a bit more
challenging. The
“Frattalone Oval” had made its brand over the past 30 years, and
was well established in the Twin Cities.
The best marketing for any company is for others to see a
symbol and be able to associate a company name with that symbol
without having to read any text.
Why would you want to change that?
Knowing we wanted to continue to associate with an oval shape,
we felt this gave our company a more professional and modern look.
I would hope everyone agrees.
The new facilities are moving right
along schedule and we are hoping to be moving in sometime in April. The project has taken a considerable amount of my time this
winter but, when finished, it will be the ideal place for us.
If you haven’t had a chance yet, feel free to stop by and
check out what our new home looks like.
Happy New Year!
Tony Frattalone,
President
Safety Column:
| Hello from the Safety and Training
Office. While work
in the field has slowed during the winter season, it is a very
busy time for training. We
have already held several training courses this year and have
many more scheduled before the busy season begins.
Thanks to those of you who have provided me with your
certificates for completed training classes. |

Safety at home…
Did you know that the average shovel-full of snow
weighs 20 lbs?
All of that lifting can lead to blisters, muscle
strains, back injuries and even heart attacks.
Make sure to stretch out, take brakes, drink plenty
of fluids, where gloves and use your legs when lifting ANY
heavy weight. |
|
I would like to acknowledge the members
of the 2003 Safety Committee whose terms are complete—Jeff Anderson,
Joe Herkenhoff and Tom Kruger. We
also appreciate the employees who volunteered to be members for the
upcoming term. Our new
committee members will be Jesse Woyke, equipment operator from the
grading crew, Eric Penk, equipment operator from the crushing crew,
and Frank Fondurulia from our maintenance shop. Welcome aboard!
Your commitment to safety and your willingness to serve is
appreciated. Together, everyone on the safety committee continues to
strive for the safest work environment in construction.
January 21, 2004, Frattalone Excavating
was honored for our roll in the C.H.AS.E. program(Construction Health
and Safety Excellence) at the Associated General Contractors of
Minnesota’s Annual Meeting. At
the meeting, Frattalone Companies Excavating and Grading, Inc. was
presented with a plaque from Scott Brener, Commissioner of the
Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. The plaque reads, “In recognition of exemplary leadership
on promoting worker health and safety through the Construction Health
and Safety Excellence Program.”
I am very proud of this accomplishment.
Without the cooperation from all of the Frattalone employees.
this level of safety could not have been achieved.
Other safety achievements worth noting:
-
Our experience mod
rate for the past reporting period was reduced by 10.68 %.
-
The number of work
days lost due to injuries was lowered.
-
Injuries were more
minor in nature than in past years.
Management’s commitment to any safety
program is crucial. I
would like to thank our management team who have shown to be the
visible company leaders we need in all areas, including safety.
It takes great strength and foresight to attempt to change the
culture of an organization. Frattalone
Companies is very fortunate to have managers and superintendents who
strongly support the safety program.
This leadership benefits all company employees by:
I cannot thank everyone enough for all
you have done and I am truly proud to be a part of TEAM FRATTALONE. Be proud of your accomplishments! Frattalone Companies, Inc. is committed to a safe work place
and ZERO injuries!
Steven Kohler ,
Safety and Training Director

A “Special Thanks” goes out to all of the drivers, operators,
mechanics, laborers and superintendents who help out with the dome
events that Frattalone Companies contract in the winter.
All who work these events put in a lot of hours and do a
tremendous job.
THANKS!

Feeding
you a line…
To
keep the young anglers happy
during the cold ice fishing season, use small bait
instead of large bait.
This way they will catch more fish.
After all, in a child’s eye, more
small fish are better than less
big fish!

We will be scheduling a fishing rod building class some time in

of the details yet, but the class will probably consist of two or
three - two hour sessions, and will be held in the office lunchroom.
If you are interested or if you have any questions, please
contact Paul or Shelly in the office.
The sooner we hear from the ones who are interested, the sooner
we can schedule a date. Space
is limited. Children
are welcome as long as there is adult supervision.

We
are in the process of updating our company brochures to coincide with
our name change and move into the new office this spring.
We are in need of pictures of job sites, machines or the new
shop/office.
If you have any pictures you think may be appropriate for our
company brochure, please let Shelly know.
If they are on your computer you can email them or, if they are
regular prints, we can scan them and return them to you.

Store
Clearance! 50% off!
O.K.,
now that we have all of the women’s attention…
we are having a 50% off sale on all merchandise in the
Frattalone Store. We need to make room for new merchandise that we
will be ordering with our new name and logo.
Remember to call ahead to check availability of items if you
are going to be making a special trip.
Harley
Rides
I
was thinking of organizing some Harley rides this summer.
Last year, we organized a ride up to Duluth, but we didn’t have
any other events.
I thought a few more might be wanted.
We
could schedule a variety of trips;
some being “long day” trips and others “one-evening
overnight” type rides. Another idea is to register as a group to
some of the “Hog” registered events where you ride to towns,
counties, states or provinces of the letters of the alphabet.
Scheduling a ride once a month would be a good start.
We
will be having an informational meeting some time in April.
If you are interested, give me a call in the office.

Toys-For-Tots
program
Every
year Frattalone is involved in the Toys-For-Tots program at
Christmas time.
We would like to express a
special “thanks” to all of the employees who donated toys
this past
season.
Toys-For-Tots is a great program, sending presents at
Christmas time to children who are less fortunate.

Here is
some good news for all of you chocolate lovers out there:
studies conducted by the confectionery industry indicate
that Chocolate can actually help you do your job better.
How?
We’re glad you asked.
Included in chocolate’s ingredients are mild
stimulants that can make you more alert as well as
contribute to your sense of overall well being.
So
treat yourself or a loved one to some chocolate.

Health Tip: For the "HEALTH" of it...
| With the New Year comes many
resolutions, most of which are to eat healthier, lose weight
and/or start exercising. One
way to start out on the right track is to shop for healthier
foods. Here are
some things to remember before you start shopping… |
|
| Load up your grocery list
with foods that are high
in protein! Your
body will burn more calories to metabolize protein than it
will to metabolize fat and carbohydrates. |
|
1.
Avoid going grocery shopping on an empty stomach, but
rather after you are finished with a meal.
You are most likely to buy unhealthy foods out of impulse when
you are hungry.
2.
Read the nutrition labels.
Any food that is labeled, “healthy” needs to contain
at least 10% of the daily value for one of several important
nutrients. Those foods
also need to be low in fat, saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol as
well.
3.
Load up on whole-grain breads and cereals, brown rice and
dried beans, which are all high in fiber.
Fiber is an essential element in healthy eating.
4.
Remember, the greener the produce is, the better it is for
you. When selecting
lettuce, purchase ones that are deepest in color (dark greens and
reds). The dark color
means beta-carotene and other carotenoids, vitamin C, folic acid,
calcium and other nutrients are present.
5.
Don’t forget the frozen produce!
How often do fruits and vegetables spoil in your refrigerator?
Buying frozen produce eliminates waste, and some frozen fruits
and vegetables contain just as many or more nutrients as fresh
produce!!
6.
Make sure to read the labels on TV dinners.
Purchase only frozen dinners that contain less than 10 grams of
fat and with the least amount of sodium and cholesterol and
carbohydrates.
7.Keep pasta on your grocery list!
Sure, it’s gotten a bad rap for being loaded with
carbohydrates, but pasta is also high in protein and contains vitamin
B and iron as well. Whole
grain pastas are available also, if you are counting your
carbohydrates.
8.
If you are planning on purchasing meats, poultry and fish,
figure out how much you will need before you shop.
When figuring out portions, here is a good tip to remember – one
serving of meat, chicken, or fish should be about the size of your
fist. Restaurant
portions are usually 2-3 times the standard!!
And, if you are a member of the “clean plate club”, or were
taught not to waste, this could be a problem.
Don’t be shy when eating out… ask for a to-go container.
Carefully
planning out your grocery list before you make a trip to the
supermarket will help with portion control and eliminate waste.
